Energy Storage Classification: What are the differences between Utility-scale, C&I, and Residential Storage?

Current energy storage is divided into three main categories:

Home energy storage: Currently, it’s typically used in conjunction with photovoltaics. Installing a photovoltaic-storage inverter and energy storage batteries can achieve independent household electricity consumption. Some manufacturers have added and integrated home charging stations, creating multifunctional all-in-one units.

II. Commercial & Industrial (C&I) Energy Storage

Currently, the primary products being sold are standalone C&I energy storage cabinets. These cabinets cannot be integrated with photovoltaic (PV) systems and are designed for independent use as a single unit. The mainstream models currently available are typically around 100 kW in power and have a capacity of over 200 kWh.
To increase revenue streams and achieve technological integration, some manufacturers are now introducing integrated PV-storage-charging solutions and equipment for the C&I sector.

III. Utility-scale(Grid-scale) energy storage in ground-based power plants

Ground-based power stations use large containerized storage, where the energy storage, inverters, and all distribution and boosting equipment are packed into containers. When they are delivered to the site, all that is needed is to dig the foundation and connect the power.

Utility-scale energy storage is now widely deployed in smart microgrids and Generation-Grid-Load-Storage (Source-Grid-Load-Storage) systems.
In microgrids, grid-scale storage serves not merely as a backup power source, but as the core pillar ensuring its stable, reliable, and efficient operation. Its critical functions include:
1.Maintaining frequency and voltage stability
2.Enabling energy time-shifting
3.Providing black-start capability
4.Acting as a backup power supply
Within integrated Generation-Grid-Load-Storage projects, large-scale storage acts as the “smart hub” and “binding agent.” The GGLS integration model pursues system-level synergistic optimization, where utility-scale storage plays the role of a “flexible regulation resource” and “intelligent hub,” seamlessly interlinking generation, grid, and load.

These are the three types of energy storage currently available.

DC contactors play an important role in the field of energy storage. Good quality and long life DC contactors with CE and UL approvals are the first choice for energy storage developers. Hotson EVHA series: such as EVHA150,EVHA400, EVHA1000,etc. The load voltage of this series of products is 12-1000 / 12-1500Vdc, and there are a variety of current specifications to meet the application requirements of different energy storage systems.
